Lance Smith has been involved in the design of a number of commercial office buildings for prestigious clients.

These range from new construction in a decentralized sub-urban setting to the refurbishment of historical buildings in existing downtowns.

His role included the management, design, documentation and contract administration of the projects. He also undertook surveys of existing historical structures, proposing procedures for their rehabilitation and in some instances the change of use.

Healthcare

Lance Smith's initial involvement with healthcare facilities was with alterations and additions to existing hospital buildings. These included new ward blocks, operating theater's, out patient departments and ancillary services buildings.
 

He subsequently researched and prepared a program and design for a 200 chair Dental Teaching Hospital for the University of Durban-Westville and assisted in the design of ward blocks for King George V Psychiatric Hospital for the Provincial Government.

With Cooper Robertson and Partners he acted as project architect for the Johns Hopkins Hospital Master Plan. The work included pre-programming, sizing and stacking of two new clinical facilities, the identification of sites for 1 million square feet of new research space and for 800 additional dorm rooms, ancillary infrastructure expansion and the development of a campus open space system.

At Duke UNiversity he was responsible for the design of the external envelope of the new Cancer Center.
